Family

Arriving at Richmond with impressive football pedigree, Dan Foley was recruited from West Perth as the son of 1959 Sandover Medallist Brian Foley. A tall centre half-forward capable of imposing himself on a contest, he showed flashes of brilliance during his debut 1983 season, most notably booting five goals in a muddy upset win over eventual grand finalists Essendon. Despite this promising start, his VFL career was continually frustrated by injuries that restricted him to just 13 games over three years. Foley briefly trained with Melbourne during the 1985 pre-season and attracted interest from Essendon, but he opted to stay at Punt Road for a final stunted campaign. He eventually returned to the WAFL in 1986, where he immediately vindicated his potential by winning West Perth's best and fairest award and leading their goalkicking.
