Stats
Bio
Recruited from South Ballarat, Dan Hanley arrived at Essendon in 1911 and immediately became a vital component of the club's famous back-to-back premiership sides. Standing 185cm, he was a robust and versatile operator who primarily manned a key defensive post but frequently rotated into the ruck to support the followers. He played in both the 1911 and 1912 flag victories, though his time at the club is also remembered for a bizarre 1912 incident where he unsuccessfully alleged a boundary umpire physically restrained him during a contest against Collingwood. His career at the top level ended abruptly after the 1914 season; following a severe eight-match suspension incurred in the penultimate round, he enlisted in the army to serve in World War I and never returned to VFL football.
