Selected with pick 8 in the 1994 National Draft from the Northern Knights, Daniel Harford quickly established himself as a vital component of the Hawthorn midfield. A hard-running ball-winner with clean skills and excellent endurance, he became a central figure at Glenferrie Oval throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. His consistency and leadership qualities eventually saw him elevated to the vice-captaincy, where he was highly regarded for his ability to accumulate possessions and direct play during a transitional era for the club.

After 153 games in brown and gold, Harford's tenure at Hawthorn ended following the 2003 season when he was traded to Carlton for a late draft pick. The move to Princes Park was intended to add experienced depth to a rebuilding Blues midfield, but his time at the club was heavily restricted by persistent injuries. He managed just eight appearances in the navy blue before retiring at the end of 2004, concluding his playing days as a respected journeyman who later found significant success in the football industry as a coach and media commentator.
