A product of the prolific Sandringham pathway, Daniel Hughes is best remembered for the significant perseverance required to earn his brief AFL cameo. Originally taken by Melbourne in the 2006 Rookie Draft following a VFL premiership with the Zebras, the medium forward possessed a strong vertical leap and clever goal sense but was plagued by hip injuries that saw him delisted without a senior game. In a rare show of faith, the Demons threw him a lifeline by re-drafting him in 2009, and his patience was finally rewarded in 2010 when he made his debut against the Western Bulldogs—more than 1,600 days after first joining the club. Hughes managed to boot a goal in each of his two career appearances before being delisted a second time, eventually continuing his football journey in the WAFL.
