Bio
Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 25 in the 2013 National Draft, Daniel McStay spent the foundational years of his career at the Brisbane Lions, where he initially oscillated between defence and attack before cementing his spot as a key forward. During his nine seasons at the Gabba, he was often characterised as a selfless structural player rather than a primary goal-kicker, tasked with crashing packs and providing a contest to support high-profile teammates like Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood. Seeking to be the true focal point of an attack, he moved to Collingwood via free agency at the end of 2022, answering the Magpies' long-standing search for a dedicated contested marking target inside 50.
McStay's tenure at Collingwood has been defined by resilience in the face of ill-timed injuries. His debut season in black and white was bittersweet; while he proved pivotal in the Preliminary Final victory over GWS, a knee injury suffered in that match heartbreakingly ruled him out of the 2023 Grand Final premiership side. Further adversity followed with a pre-season ACL rupture the following summer, but McStay worked his way back to reclaim his position in the senior side. Now an experienced veteran, he continues to provide essential structure and aerial presence, using his strong hands and work rate to create opportunities for the Magpies' small forwards while chipping in on the scoreboard himself.
