Bio
Recruited from the Southport Sharks with pick 30 in the 2002 National Draft, Daniel Merrett was a late convert to Australian football having played rugby league throughout his youth. After spending his early years developing in the reserves behind the legendary triple-premiership defensive unit of Mal Michael and Justin Leppitsch, Merrett eventually assumed the mantle of the Lions' full-back. A physically imposing key defender, he became renowned for his fierce spoiling ability and closing speed, often tasked with shutting down the competition's strongest power forwards during a challenging transitional era for the club.
While his primary role was anchoring the backline, Merrett famously demonstrated his versatility by swinging forward when required, most notably booting seven goals against Greater Western Sydney in 2012. A cult figure among Brisbane supporters due to his distinctive red hair and nickname "Sauce," he eventually ascended to the vice-captaincy and provided vital leadership to a young list. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2016 season, finishing his career as a one-club player on exactly 200 games.
