A decorated SANFL star long before the Adelaide Crows were formed, Darel Hart was a natural selection for the club's inaugural list in 1991. Having already established himself as a premiership captain and dual best-and-fairest winner after crossing from Central District to North Adelaide in the 1980s, Hart brought vital experience and class to the fledgling AFL side. He operated as a versatile utility, effective as a rebounding defender who could read the play or as a dangerous option forward of centre, evidenced by his respectable goal tally. While he was a consistent contributor across the Crows' first two seasons, his most remarkable individual performance of the era actually came in the SANFL; following the conclusion of Adelaide's 1991 AFL campaign, he returned to the Roosters for the state league finals and booted seven goals to win the Jack Oatey Medal in their premiership victory. Hart left the national stage at the end of 1992 to take up a playing-coach role at North Adelaide, cementing his status as a South Australian football great.
