Bio
The son of former Melbourne player Barry Bourke, Darren Bourke had to take the long road to the AFL after failing to graduate from the Demons' under-19s program in the late 1980s. He reinvented himself as a star midfielder in the VFA with Dandenong, winning two best and fairest awards and a premiership, which prompted St Kilda to recruit him with pick 60 in the 1993 Pre-Season Draft. Bourke made an immediate impact at Moorabbin as a prolific ball-winner, averaging 20 disposals in his debut season and polling maximum Brownlow votes in just his third senior game against Sydney. However, he was unable to sustain that early dominance, managing just 18 games over the next three years as he drifted out of the senior side before being delisted at the end of 1996.
