Recruited from North Hobart, Darren Davies was a standout product of the Tasmanian football nursery who arrived at the VFL with a formidable reputation, having played in a premiership and finished runner-up in the William Leitch Medal. Selected by Footscray with the seventh pick in the 1987 National Draft, he made an immediate impact at the Western Oval, missing just one game in a promising debut season while playing chiefly as a half-forward and winger. Despite his high draft pedigree and a strong start, Davies struggled to maintain his spot in the senior side over the following two years and was eventually delisted by the Bulldogs. He was thrown a lifeline by St Kilda in the 1991 Pre-Season Draft, but managed just two appearances for the Saints before his AFL career concluded.
