Recruited from Violet Town, Darren Flanigan established himself as a stalwart ruckman for Geelong throughout the 1980s. Standing at 198cm, he was a traditional tap specialist whose primary role was providing first use to the Cats' prolific midfield brigade. While his career was occasionally interrupted by injury, his durability and physical presence were vital during the club's resurgence under Malcolm Blight. His tenure at Kardinia Park was highlighted by his role in the 1989 Grand Final, where he battled against Hawthorn's formidable ruck division in one of the sport's most brutal and celebrated deciders.

After 11 seasons and 130 games in the hoops, Flanigan crossed to St Kilda for the 1992 season, providing experienced cover for the Saints' developing tall timber. He managed just one season at Moorabbin before retiring, finishing with 138 senior games. Beyond his playing days, Flanigan built a substantial legacy in football administration and talent pathways, becoming a highly respected figure in the management of the TAC Cup and AFL Victoria's development programs, where he played a crucial role in shaping the careers of future AFL stars.
