Bio
A resilient utility recruited from the Riverina stronghold of Walla Walla and Lavington, Darren Holmes is best remembered for enduring one of the most difficult runs of team success in VFL/AFL history. He commenced his career with the Sydney Swans during their bleak early 1990s era, where he was often tasked with defensive roles in a backline under constant siege. While he was a serviceable player who enjoyed a career-best season in 1992, his most famous moment at the SCG occurred in 1993 when he tackled a piglet that had been released onto the field to taunt St Kilda full-forward Tony Lockett. Holmes was traded to Fitzroy ahead of the 1995 season, but found himself jumping from the frying pan into the fire as he joined the Roys for their tumultuous final years. He remained with the club until its ultimate merger, playing in the 1996 squad and finishing his career with the unenviable distinction of playing in five consecutive wooden spoon sides—three with Sydney and two with Fitzroy—a testament to his persistence in the face of constant on-field adversity.
