Recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays with the eighth selection in the 1997 Pre-season Draft, Darren Hulme quickly established himself as a fan favourite at Carlton. Standing at just 175cm, he was affectionately dubbed "Pup" due to his physical resemblance and similarly tenacious playing style to veteran teammate Fraser "Dog" Brown. Hulme was a hard-nosed midfielder and tagger who thrived on contested footy, often tasked with curbing the influence of the opposition's most dangerous on-ballers. While his kicking was occasionally scrutinised early in his career, his ferocious attack on the ball and willingness to put his body on the line endeared him to the Blues faithful during a challenging era for the club.

Despite his size, Hulme developed into a vital engine room contributor, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 2003 Best and Fairest and tying for the most Brownlow Medal votes by a Carlton player in 2001. However, his career was heavily impacted by injury setbacks, including a quad strain that ruled him out of the 1999 finals series and a significant knee injury that derailed his 2002 campaign. After struggling with a groin issue throughout 2004, he was delisted at the end of the season, finishing his time at Princes Park with 110 games of gritty service before continuing his football journey in local leagues.
