Originally elevated from the rookie list by Melbourne, Darren Jolly showed promise early in his career but found opportunities limited behind All-Australian ruckman Jeff White. Seeking a lead ruck role, he was traded to Sydney ahead of the 2005 season, where his career truly flourished. Jolly became a critical component of the Swans' stoppage setup, utilising his superior endurance and tap work to help deliver the club's historic 2005 premiership. Over five seasons in the Harbour City, he established himself as one of the competition's premier big men before requesting a trade back to Victoria to join Collingwood at the end of 2009.

Viewed as the final piece of the premiership puzzle for the Magpies, Jolly made an immediate impact, claiming his second premiership medallion in his debut year at the club in 2010. A traditional ruckman who could also push forward to kick vital goals, his aerobic capacity allowed him to grind down opponents over the course of four quarters. While injuries hampered his final season in 2013 leading to his retirement, Jolly departed the game as a member of the exclusive group of players to win flags at two different clubs, revered for his professionalism and competitive nature.
