A tall defender recruited from St Peters East Bentleigh, Darren Louttit progressed through Melbourne's grades to feature in the club's 1983 Under-19 premiership victory. After showing solid form in his debut 1985 season, his stint with the Demons was derailed by a broken arm early the following year. Louttit’s search for a second chance at St Kilda during the 1987 pre-season ended abruptly after a practice match altercation with star forward Tony Lockett saw him cleared to Fitzroy before the premiership season began. The change of scenery brought no change in fortune, as he broke his arm again in his first practice match for the Lions, forcing him to sit out the entire year. He returned to play just two senior games in 1988 before departing the VFL, though he later established a unique legacy overseas as a co-founder and coach of the Boston Demons in the United States.
