Bio
Recruited from Dandenong in the VFA, Darren Millane arrived at Collingwood in 1984 and swiftly redefined the role of a wingman. While traditional players in the position relied on speed and outside run, Millane was a brute force, utilising his imposing frame and uncompromising aggression to win contested possession and intimidate opposition sides. His capacity to dominate the air and deliver long, penetrating kicks made him the engine room of the Magpies' midfield, a dominance acknowledged when he won the club's best and fairest in 1987 and earned All-Australian selection in 1990.
Millane is best remembered as the spiritual leader of Collingwood's famous 1990 premiership side. Displaying immense physical resilience, he played through the finals series with a broken thumb, relying on painkillers to take the field. Fittingly, the ball was in his hands when the final siren sounded to end the club's 32-year premiership drought. His career ended tragically in October 1991 when he died in a car accident at the age of 26. His legacy at Victoria Park endures as the ultimate clubman and tough competitor, with his number 42 jumper remaining a revered symbol of the club's history.
