Bio
Recruited from Belmont, Darren Morgan was a versatile speedster who provided plenty of run for Geelong during the mid-to-late 1980s. He made an immediate impact at senior level, earning best-on-ground honours in just his third game against Richmond, and established himself as a player who could operate effectively on a wing, across half-back, or drift forward to hit the scoreboard. His 1989 campaign was a career highlight; he played 21 games—primarily in defence—and famously booted five goals against West Coast to match the output of star teammates Gary Ablett and Billy Brownless. However, his season ended in heartbreak, as he played in the Qualifying Final but lost his spot for the historic Grand Final due to the return of David Cameron. Morgan's AFL career concluded in unusual circumstances; after being traded to Sydney at the end of 1990, he refused the move to the Harbour City, opting instead to play for Werribee in the VFA where he won a Best and Fairest before a final, game-less stint on Footscray's list.
