Bio
A mature-age recruit from Western Australia, Darren O'Brien arrived at Melbourne with a decorated WAFL resume that included a best and fairest and a premiership with West Perth. Selected with pick 60 in the 1995 National Draft, the 27-year-old was considered a surprise selection but immediately repaid the club's faith, using his penetrating left-foot kick and midfield experience to win the Harold Ball Memorial Trophy as Melbourne's Best First Year Player in 1996. Despite this promising start, O'Brien struggled to consolidate his place in the senior side during his second season, hindered by a knee injury and fluctuating form. He was delisted at the end of 1997 after just two seasons at the top level and returned to the WAFL to finish his playing days.
