Bio
Recruited from Doncaster Heights, Darren Payne was a small utility who battled for senior opportunities during Fitzroy’s tumultuous final years in the AFL. Standing at 177cm, he made his debut in 1993 but struggled to cement a regular spot in the best 22, managing just six appearances across three seasons as the Lions faced severe on-field and financial difficulties. While his time at the top level was brief and resulted in his delisting at the end of 1995, Payne proved his quality at state league level almost immediately. He crossed to the VFA to join Box Hill, where he claimed the club's best and fairest award in 1996, before later moving to Western Australia to continue his career with Claremont.
