Bio
A resolute defender who fought hard for his opportunities across two clubs, Darren Saunders entered the VFL via a classic zoning anomaly. While the Altona resident was originally zoned to South Melbourne, he was cleared to play for Footscray because his grandmother lived in Seddon. Recruited from Kingsville, he managed six senior games for the Bulldogs in 1986 before dropping out of the league to play for East Ballarat. He was offered a second lifeline by Collingwood in 1988, where he carved out a niche as a depth player in the backline. Although he featured in the Magpies' 1989 Semi-Final side, he struggled to cement a regular spot during the club's peak years; he played four early games during the historic 1990 premiership season but lost his place after Round 5 and missed the ultimate glory in October. Saunders remained on the fringe of selection at Victoria Park until 1993, eventually finishing his career with Werribee in the VFA.
