Bio
Recruited from Oakleigh Districts, Darren Steele carved out a respectable career as a disciplined run-with player, primarily serving North Melbourne during a transitional era for the club. Debuting as a teenager in 1984, he evolved into a reliable tagger known for his close-checking ability and concentration rather than accumulation, often tasked with nullifying the opposition's most dangerous rover or midfielder. He played 116 games for the Kangaroos before being delisted at the conclusion of the 1992 season as the club began to reshape its list under new coaching structures.
Steele was thrown a lifeline by Geelong in the 1993 Pre-Season Draft, where his defensive accountability provided a necessary counterbalance to the Cats' high-scoring, attacking midfield group. He managed 21 games across two seasons at Kardinia Park, adding veteran experience to Malcolm Blight's side. His career culminated on the league's biggest stage, as he was selected for the 1994 Grand Final against West Coast. That match ultimately proved to be his final appearance at AFL level, retiring as a hard-working utility who maximised his talents through role-playing and perseverance.
