Recruited from Sandy Bay in Tasmania with pick 26 in the 1986 National Draft, Darrin Pritchard became a vital cog in the dominant Hawthorn sides of the late 1980s and early 1990s. A dashing wingman known for his pace, skill, and flowing mullet, he slotted seamlessly into a midfield boasting names like Tuck, Platten, and DiPierdomenico. While often underrated externally, his precise delivery was instrumental for key forward Jason Dunstall, and he played a crucial role in the Hawks’ premiership hat-trick of 1988, 1989, and 1991.

Pritchard saved his best football for the biggest stages, most notably the brutal 1989 Grand Final against Geelong. After John Platten was concussed, Pritchard moved into the centre and played a career-defining game, with many considering him unlucky not to win the Norm Smith Medal. He delivered again in the 1991 decider, curbing West Coast star Peter Matera and booting the sealing goal. A severe broken leg suffered against Essendon in 1995 hampered his final years, but he fought back to retire as a three-time premiership player and a revered figure at Glenferrie.
