Bio
Recruited from SANFL club Central District, Darryl Cowie arrived at St Kilda in 1982 as a towering 196cm utility with a unique off-field reputation as a professional glass-blower. He quickly established himself as a versatile big man capable of plugging holes at full-back, centre half-forward, or in the ruck, enjoying his most consistent season in 1984. However, a severe concussion sustained in a 1985 practice match derailed his progress at Moorabbin, eventually leading to him being cut from the Saints' list. Handed a lifeline by Richmond midway through the 1986 season, Cowie fought his way into the senior side for a brief stint—notably earning a Brownlow vote for a 16-disposal effort against West Coast in 1987—but persistent hamstring and knee issues ultimately forced him into retirement after just seven games at Tigerland.
