Bio
Recruited from the Port Adelaide Magpies via the 1994 Pre-season Draft, Darryl Wakelin commenced his AFL career at St Kilda, where he initially played alongside his twin brother Shane. He quickly developed into a key pillar of the Saints' defence, featuring in the 1997 Grand Final loss to Adelaide before requesting a trade back to his home state of South Australia at the end of the 2000 season.
Joining Port Adelaide, Wakelin became the cornerstone of the Power's backline during their era of dominance in the early 2000s. As a classic full-back, he was renowned for his close-checking style and ability to negate the competition's strongest power forwards through disciplined spoiling and bodywork. His defensive reliability proved instrumental in Port Adelaide's breakthrough 2004 Premiership victory, and he retired in 2007 as a highly respected 250-game veteran who had maximised his potential through consistency and grit.
