Bio
Recruited from Strathmerton in the Murray Football League, Daryl Mares arrived at Glenferrie Oval as a teenager looking to break into the VFL ranks during the mid-1960s. A diminutive operator standing just 174cm, he was primarily utilised as a rover and forward pocket, displaying a handy knack for finding the goals during his limited opportunities at the top level. He broke into the senior side in 1965 but found sustained selection difficult to come by, spending the entire 1966 season out of the senior lineup before earning a brief recall in 1967. Unable to cement a permanent place in a Hawthorn squad that was slowly building toward its golden era, Mares departed the club after five senior appearances, leaving behind a respectable strike rate of four goals.
