Bio
A prolific ball-winner at the lower levels, Daryl Vernon was a pacy rover who struggled to command a regular senior game despite flashes of genuine class. Recruited from Essex Heights, he claimed the Gardiner Medal as the reserves' best and fairest in 1981 but found it difficult to break into the Tigers' powerful senior lineup. Vernon spent a season in the WAFL with South Fremantle before joining the Sydney Swans during their chaotic early years in the harbour city. He returned to Punt Road in 1985 and briefly teased his full potential with a standout 30-disposal, three-Brownlow vote performance against Melbourne at the MCG. Unable to maintain that spot, he eventually crossed to the VFA, where he cemented his legacy as a Springvale premiership captain and Norm Goss Medallist.
