Recruited from the Hampton Rovers in the amateur ranks, Dave Bland was a talented ruckman and forward whose time at St Kilda was defined by high impact but limited availability. A physically uncompromising competitor, his career was frequently interrupted by injuries and suspension, most notably during a turbulent 1953 season where he received a lengthy ban following a heavy on-field clash against Carlton. despite these setbacks, his quality was undeniable when he could get on the park; his final VFL campaign in 1955 remains a standout statistical anomaly, as he polled eight Brownlow votes, finished third in the best and fairest, and won the club's Grosvenor Trophy despite playing just seven games. Bland departed the Saints to establish a business in Adelaide, where he continued his football journey in the SANFL with South Adelaide and Norwood, eventually earning state selection for South Australia.
