Dave Ferguson holds a unique place in Essendon history as a player whose short career coincided with the club's greatest early triumph. Recruited from the West Melbourne Juniors during the inaugural VFL season of 1897, he did not make his senior debut until the finals series, being thrust directly into the heat of a round-robin semi-final against Collingwood. Stationed across half-back, Ferguson was noted by observers for his vigorous attack on the ball, helping the "Same Olds" secure a vital victory on their way to claiming the league's first-ever premiership.
