Recruited from St Kilda City, Dave McGlashan was a tall key forward whose VFL career is best remembered for one of the most unlucky selection decisions in Melbourne's history. Standing at 194cm, he broke into the senior side in 1981 but struggled with a broken wrist before topping the club's reserves goalkicking tally. His moment in the sun arrived in Round 10, 1982, when he was promoted to replace the suspended cult figure Mark "Jacko" Jackson; McGlashan seized the opportunity by booting six goals in a win over Collingwood. Despite this dominant performance, he was immediately omitted the following week to accommodate Jackson's return, leaving McGlashan with the rare distinction of being dropped after a best-on-ground caliber display. He managed just one further senior appearance, remaining a unique footnote in the Demons' folklore.
