Recruited from the VAFA powerhouse University Blues, David "Sparkles" Barkley arrived at the Cattery with a reputation as a prolific amateur goalkicker, having booted 94 majors in the 1971 season alone. A tall, strong-marking forward standing at 189cm, Barkley was a Geelong College product who transitioned effectively into the VFL, offering a reliable avenue to goal during his five-season stint. While he never quite replicated his massive amateur tallies at the elite level, he was a consistent contributor who averaged better than a goal a game, playing his best football as a key attacking target in the mid-1970s. He departed the league at just 26 years of age following a solid 1976 campaign where he featured 18 times, leaving behind a short but respectable career as a damaging forward option.
