Originally a Grovedale junior who progressed through the Geelong under-19s, David Bolton took a detour via the SANFL to establish his senior credentials. After failing to break into the Cats' senior side as a teenager, he moved to Woodville where his impressive form over three seasons eventually lured Geelong into recruiting him back to Kardinia Park in 1984. He quickly proved his worth as a pacy wingman, playing 28 games over two seasons, but his career trajectory shifted dramatically with the arrival of the private ownership era in Sydney.

In 1986, Bolton became a key figure in the Sydney Swans' aggressive recruitment drive under Dr Geoffrey Edelsten. Seeking financial security for his young family, he joined a star-studded influx of talent that included Greg Williams and Bernard Toohey, instantly helping the Swans break a long finals drought in his first season. Bolton’s speed and skill on the wing saw him represent Australia in the International Rules series and achieve the rare feat of playing State of Origin football for three different territories: Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. He remained a consistent performer for the Swans during their competitive late-80s period before eventually returning to the Geelong region to coach at the local level.
