A rare NSW local product emerging from Pennant Hills, David Brown was handed the imposing responsibility of filling the full-forward void left by Warwick Capper's high-profile move to the Brisbane Bears in 1988. The 192cm spearhead immediately looked up to the task, booting four goals on debut in a gritty three-point victory over Geelong at Kardinia Park and tallying 14 majors across his first four matches. However, his promising trajectory was brutally halted in his fifth game against Essendon at the SCG when he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. Although Brown worked his way back from a knee reconstruction to play in the following two seasons, he was unable to regain his explosive mobility and dominance, ultimately forcing a premature end to a career that had briefly promised to solve Sydney's goal-kicking woes.
