Recruited from St Bernard’s Old Collegians, David Collins was an imposing centre half-forward who appeared poised for a significant career after starring in Essendon’s 1968 reserves premiership side. He broke into the senior lineup the following season, but his time at the top level was cruelled by injury, including a severe facial fracture sustained early in his tenure and a knee injury that wiped out most of his 1970 campaign. After leaving the VFL to play for Williamstown and captain-coach Aberfeldie to an EDFL flag, Collins returned to Windy Hill to forge a lasting legacy off the field. He served as a junior skills coach and a long-term member of the match committee during the Bombers' golden eras in the 1980s and 1990s, cementing his status as a dedicated clubman well beyond his playing days.
