David Darcy established himself as a pillar of the Footscray lineup during the 1960s, developing into a versatile key position player capable of holding down full-back or swinging forward to provide a target in attack. Renowned for his strong overhead marking and leadership qualities, he rose to become the captain of the Bulldogs and represented Victoria in interstate football. His time at the Western Oval occurred during a generally lean period for the club following their 1961 Grand Final appearance, but Darcy remained a consistently reliable performer in the defensive half throughout the decade.

Following his VFL career, Darcy moved to South Australia in 1972 to captain-coach South Adelaide in the SANFL. While his own on-field contribution was distinguished, his standing in Bulldogs history is heavily defined by the father-son dynasty he initiated. As the father of former captain and All-Australian Luke Darcy, and the grandfather of current tall utility Sam Darcy, he laid the foundation for a rare three-generation connection that has made the Darcy name synonymous with the club.
