Bio
Standing 194cm, David Ellis was a towering ruckman recruited from Sandringham who managed 27 games for St Kilda across a stop-start career. Breaking into the senior side in 1972, he was utilised primarily for his height and tap work, playing the majority of his football over his first three seasons. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Ellis balanced the physical demands of VFL football with intense academic studies at La Trobe University. This focus on his professional life eventually curtailed his time at the elite level; after a hiatus and a solitary return game in 1977, he retired from the league to pursue a distinguished career in medical science, eventually moving to South Australia to head the National Mycology Reference Unit.
