Teams

Recruited as a non-traditional athlete from a basketball background, David Fanning stood at an imposing 204cm and was developed by Collingwood as a long-term ruck project. After spending time on the rookie list, he earned elevation to the senior squad and made his debut in 2004, relying on his significant height advantage and athleticism to compete at stoppages. While he managed 14 games over three seasons, Fanning often found it difficult to match the physical intensity of seasoned AFL ruckmen and struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Magpies' lineup. He was delisted following the 2006 season and subsequently forged a strong career at state league level, becoming a premiership player and dominant ruckman for Port Melbourne in the VFL.
