Bio
Recruited from the Tassie Mariners with pick 7 in the 2001 National Draft, David Hale began his career at North Melbourne carrying the expectations of a top-tier selection. Standing 201cm, he developed into a versatile ruck-forward, though he often oscillated between the two roles as the Kangaroos shuffled their key position stocks to find the right balance. While capable of match-winning performances—highlighted by a standout eight-goal haul against eventual premiers Geelong in 2008—he sometimes struggled to nail down a permanent definition within the side. After 129 games at Arden Street, he was traded to Hawthorn following the 2010 season, a move that revitalised his career and provided the Hawks with a crucial structural piece.
At Hawthorn, Hale became the archetype of the modern resting ruckman, using his height to take contested marks deep in attack while offering reliable support in the centre square. His ability to drift forward and convert set shots made him a difficult matchup for opposition defences already preoccupied with the Hawks' other scoring threats. He became an integral member of Alastair Clarkson's dynasty, playing a vital role in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 premiership victories. Hale retired immediately after the 2015 Grand Final triumph, concluding his career as a highly respected triple premiership player who maximised his utility on the game's biggest stage.
