Bio
Recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays with pick 40 in the 1999 National Draft, David Hille arrived at Windy Hill during the club's dominant early-2000s era. Developing his craft behind established veterans like Steven Alessio and Paul Salmon, he steadily evolved into Essendon's first-choice ruckman. Hille was renowned for his mobility and capacity to push forward, proving himself as a dangerous marking target and a reliable set shot for goal. This versatility allowed him to kick 153 career goals, a significant return for a primary ruckman, and saw him become a key structural pillar for the Bombers throughout the mid-2000s.
His leadership qualities were recognised when he served as acting captain for much of the 2006 season following a long-term injury to Matthew Lloyd. Hille reached his peak in 2008, winning the Crichton Medal as the club's best and fairest player. However, his momentum was halted by a ruptured ACL suffered in the opening minutes of the 2009 Anzac Day clash, an injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the season. Upon his return, he formed a dynamic ruck tandem with Paddy Ryder, though persistent injury issues restricted his continuity in the twilight of his career. He retired in 2013 as a Life Member of the club, falling just four games short of the 200-game milestone.
