Bio
Recruited from the VAFA after a stellar campaign with the Monash Blues, David Hone arrived at Melbourne in 1969 as a polished amateur ready for the top level. He immediately secured a regular spot in the Demons' defence, operating primarily as a half-back flanker who could also rotate through the midfield as a ruck-rover. Despite playing 18 of a possible 20 games in his debut season and appearing set for a long career, his time in the VFL was cut short by his off-field ambitions. Hone left Australia at the end of the year to further his studies at Oxford University in England, where he also played first-class cricket. He returned to Melbourne in 1971 hoping to resume his place in the side, but injury prevented him from adding to his tally, and he eventually retired to pursue a distinguished career as a headmaster.
