Bio
Recruited by Essendon via the rookie list, David Johnson faced the difficult task of breaking into the Bombers' dominant lineup of the early 2000s and eventually sought a trade to Geelong in search of senior opportunities. The younger brother of Essendon premiership player Mark Johnson, David forged his own identity at Kardinia Park as a courageous medium defender who attacked the contest with fearless physicality. He became a reliable contributor during the Cats' rise under Mark Thompson, often tasked with shutting down dangerous opposition forwards while providing rebound from the back half. Despite his consistent service during Geelong's dominant home-and-away campaigns, Johnson is largely remembered as a hard-luck story of the club's golden era, having played significant football in premiership years only to be squeezed out of the final 22 for both the 2007 and 2009 Grand Final victories.
