Bio
A standout junior recruit from local club Doutta Stars, David Johnston arrived at Essendon with significant potential after being named the best Victorian player at the 1985 Teal Cup. He broke into the senior side as an 18-year-old in 1987, utilised primarily as a nuggety half-back, but found it difficult to cement a permanent position in a formidable Bombers lineup. After managing just 41 games across six seasons at Windy Hill, Johnston was thrown a lifeline by Fitzroy, who selected him with pick nine in the 1992 Mid-Season Draft. He spent the remainder of his career adding experience to the Lions' defence, playing a further 25 games before departing the league at the end of 1994.
