Bio
Recruited from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick 48 in the 2006 National Draft, David Mackay arrived at West Lakes as a lightly framed teenager possessing elite speed. After spending his first season developing in the SANFL, he made his debut in 2008 and quickly cemented his spot in the senior side, earning a Rising Star nomination the following year. Primarily deployed as a winger and outside midfielder, Mackay was relied upon to provide run-and-carry and break lines, although he transitioned into a defensive role during the latter stages of his career to offer drive from half-back.
Throughout his 15-season tenure, Mackay was often a polarizing figure among the fanbase, frequently facing scrutiny regarding his consistency and physical presence in the contest. Despite external criticism, he remained an incredibly durable and trusted utility for a succession of senior coaches—from Neil Craig to Matthew Nicks—who valued his selfless running patterns, flexibility, and tactical discipline. A member of the Grand Final side in 2017, he retired in 2021 as one of the most capped players in Adelaide's history, finishing his one-club career just three games short of the 250 milestone.
