A towering ruckman standing 200cm tall, David Manson arrived at Kardinia Park as a mature-age recruit after dominating the VFA with Geelong West. Originally from Horsham, Manson carved out a formidable reputation in the association, featuring in premiership success before the Cats listed him in 1976 at the age of 25. With his imposing 105kg frame, he was a traditional heavy-bodied ruckman who relied on his sheer size and reach to control stoppages and provide a contest against the league's premier big men. His most consistent campaign came in 1978 under coach Rod Olsson, where he played 19 games and booted 10 goals, playing an important structural role during the club's finals series against Hawthorn and North Melbourne. Although his VFL career was limited to three seasons, Manson was a notable example of the successful VFA-to-VFL pathway in the 1970s, retiring as a player who had proven his ability to compete at the elite level.
