Bio
Recruited from Newborough in the Latrobe Valley, David McKay made an immediate impression at Carlton after debuting in 1969, rapidly evolving into one of the league's most versatile key position players. Known affectionately as "Swan" due to his graceful movement and spectacular leaping ability, he possessed a rare mix of aerial dominance and ground-level agility that allowed him to flourish at both centre half-back and centre half-forward. McKay is perhaps best remembered for his ability to rise to the occasion in major games, most notably taking a screamer of a mark during the 1970 Grand Final that helped spur the Blues' famous comeback against Collingwood.
A cornerstone of Carlton's sustained success throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, McKay became a four-time premiership player, featuring in the 1970, 1972, 1979, and 1981 flag-winning sides. His slight build often led opponents to underestimate his durability, yet he remained a resilient fixture in the side for over a decade. While often understated in a team full of superstars, his consistency and capacity to swing matches with his overhead marking cemented his status as a club great. He retired following the 1981 premiership triumph as a Carlton Hall of Fame inductee, leaving a legacy defined by elegance in the air and efficiency in finals football.
