Bio
Recruited from Wodonga in the Ovens and Murray Football League, David McLeish arrived at the Lake Oval in 1969 and quickly established himself as a fixture in the South Melbourne lineup. While the club often struggled for on-field success during the 1970s, McLeish provided reliability and flair from the backline. He was the archetypal dashing half-back flanker of his era, known for his ability to back his judgement, intercept the ball, and launch counter-attacks with long, rebounding runs through the centre of the ground.
McLeish was renowned for his toughness and durability, becoming one of the few shining lights in a South Melbourne side that frequently languished near the bottom of the ladder. His consistency saw him earn state selection for Victoria and eventually captain the club in 1979. He retired in 1980, just prior to the club's relocation to Sydney, finishing as a 200-game player and a Life Member. McLeish remains a revered figure from the final decade of the Bloods' tenure at Lakeside.
