Recruited from Preston in the VFA, David McMahon developed into one of Fitzroy’s most versatile and reliable servants throughout the 1970s and 80s. While he began his tenure as a determined half-back flanker, he eventually transitioned further up the ground, reinventing himself as a damaging half-forward and rotation on-baller. He was not just a accumulator but a player capable of turning matches; his performance against reigning premiers Richmond in 1981 remains a standout, where he booted five goals and the match-sealer in a famous upset.

A fixture of the Lions' side for 12 seasons, McMahon was a key component of the club's resurgence under Robert Walls, playing a vital role in multiple finals campaigns including the memorable 1979 elimination final victory. His ability to hit the scoreboard became a defining feature of his later years, highlighted by a career-high 37 goals in 1982. A Victorian state representative and Best and Fairest runner-up, he retired as a revered one-club player and remained deeply committed to the Lions off the field, serving on the board during the turbulent 1990s to fight against the proposed merger with North Melbourne.
