Recruited from West Torrens in the SANFL, David Mensch carved out a niche as a physical key forward during a strong era for Geelong. Making his debut in 1992, he became known for his imposing frame and ability to crash packs, often providing a structural foil for high-profile teammates like Gary Ablett Sr and Billy Brownless. While he possessed strong hands and a significant presence in contested situations, Mensch was famously known for his unorthodox and often ungainly kicking style, which garnered him cult status among the Cats faithful. Despite the aesthetic limitations of his disposal, he was a serviceable fixture in the side, featuring in the club's Grand Final defeats of 1992, 1994, and 1995.

As the Cats transitioned away from their heavy-scoring teams of the early 90s, Mensch took on greater responsibility, topping the club's goalkicking in 1998. His durability and aggression allowed him to compete fiercely against the era's strongest defenders, though his pace became an issue as the game sped up in the new millennium. He remained with the club until the end of the 2002 season, when he was delisted as coach Mark Thompson aggressively overhauled the list to prioritize the youth that would eventually break the premiership drought. Mensch departed Kardinia Park as a hardworking tall who maximised his physical attributes to forge a respectable decade-long career.
