Bio
Recruited from Turvey Park in Wagga Wagga, David Murphy was a product of the Swans’ productive Riverina zoning pathway. While recruiters initially travelled to the region to scout Paul Hawke, they were captivated by Murphy’s electric speed and signed him as well, bringing him to Sydney as a 21-year-old in 1984. He quickly established himself as a specialist wingman, using his "roadrunner" pace and elite fitness to burn off opponents at the SCG. During the high-scoring Edelsten era of the late 1980s, Murphy was a vital outside carrier, providing the run and delivery for a star-studded midfield that included Greg Williams and Gerard Healy.
Murphy’s consistency and skill were recognised with All-Australian selection in 1988, a year where he also polled significantly in the Brownlow Medal. He holds a unique place in football trivia as a player who represented Victoria in State of Origin despite never living in the state, while also wearing the light blue guernsey for New South Wales. Although he played during a period where the Swans often faltered in finals, his individual standing at the club is unquestioned. He was inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame and named on the wing in the Sydney Swans Team of the Century, eventually retiring in 1993 as the club began a ruthless list cull under Ron Barassi.
