Hailing from Ulverstone, Tasmania, David Neitz arrived at Melbourne as a physically precocious teenager, making his debut in 1993. While best remembered as a powerhouse full forward, Neitz spent the formative years of his career as a commanding centre half-back, earning his first All-Australian blazer in 1995 as a defender. His versatility and imposing physical stature allowed the Demons to utilise him at both ends of the ground before he settled permanently inside the forward 50 at the turn of the millennium.

As the long-serving skipper, Neitz led by example with a blend of brute strength, strong contested marking, and reliable set-shot kicking. His individual peak came in 2002 when he became the first Melbourne player to win the Coleman Medal, booting 82 goals, and was named the All-Australian full forward. He captained the club through several finals campaigns, including the 2000 Grand Final, providing a stable focal point during an era of inconsistent team performance.
