Bio
Recruited from WAFL powerhouse Claremont, David O'Connell was an athletic key position prospect who joined his brother Michael at West Coast following the Tigers' 1987 premiership. Standing 193cm, he operated primarily as a forward who could pinch-hit in the ruck, a role that saw him feature in the Eagles' historic first final against Melbourne in 1988. He enjoyed his most consistent season in 1989 as a deputy to Phil Scott, but fell out of favour the following year and was traded to Fitzroy as part of the high-profile exchange that sent Dale Kickett west. In Melbourne, O'Connell reunited with former WA teammate John Ironmonger to shore up the Lions' ruck division, adding valuable height and experience to the side for two seasons before his AFL career concluded.
