Bio
A local product recruited from Newcomb, David O'Keeffe began his career at Geelong as a tall wingman capable of covering significant ground. He tasted early success as a member of the Cats' 1982 reserves premiership side, eventually cementing his place in the senior lineup by 1984 where he played 19 games. despite his promise at Kardinia Park, O'Keeffe became part of VFL history in 1987 when he moved north to join the Brisbane Bears' inaugural squad, featuring in the club's first-ever premiership season match against North Melbourne.
At Brisbane, O'Keeffe evolved into a versatile utility and key position player, using his 189cm frame to plug gaps across the field. He became a reliable fixture in the Bears' often-struggling lineup, notably reinventing himself as a defender during the late 80s. His standout performance came in 1989 during a famous upset over Hawthorn, where he played at full-back and restricted legendary goalkicker Jason Dunstall to just three majors. O'Keeffe finished his time at the top level as a respected veteran, bookending his career with a second reserves premiership—this time for the Bears—in his final season.
